New research indicates that patients who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro may regain shed pounds far faster than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a major health publication demonstrates that while obese people often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying such treatments must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment concludes," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about 18 months.
Analyzing Approaches
The research, which reviewed 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the effects of these new drugs with other pills.
Scientists note that people who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Rebound
Doctors believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.
"Sustained high doses of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen responsiveness to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication results in appetite is unsuppressed, making excessive eating much more probable."
An Ongoing Condition?
Health authorities suggest the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Professionals say that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the findings "highlight the persistent nature of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like high blood pressure.
Patient Accounts
People who have discontinued the jabs report a sudden return of cravings.
"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you become ravenous," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not developed sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.
Significant Interest
Recent estimates show that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the greatest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a permanent fix and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
